KUCHING, Dec 20 — The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) has urged companies from Sarawak to participate in next year’s edition of the Malaysian International Halal Exhibition (Mihas), to be held on September 12-15.

Speaking at the Halal Market Readiness and Export Opportunities Seminar here today, its deputy chief executive officer for export acceleration Sharimahton Mat Saleh said the 19th edition of Mihas, a hybrid event themed “Leading the Halal World”, will be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Mihas is a trading platform for halal manufacturers, suppliers and distributors from around the world to gather, meet, network, and do business, she said.

Sharimahton also said that Matrade will be organising 252 programmes next year to help companies to get involved in the export market, and encouraged Malaysian companies, especially those from Sarawak, to use the facilities provided by the national trade agency to promote their products and services abroad.

“In the context of the Malaysian halal ecosystem, Matrade is driving efforts to internationalise Malaysian halal products and services,” she said.

Therefore, she has urged companies in Sarawak to participate in Mihas to promote products and services in order to reach the overseas markets.

Meanwhile, Sharimahton said Malaysia’s trade saw excellent growth for the first 11 months of this year, achieving record figures for exports, imports and trade surplus.

She said trade value rose by 29.9 per cent to RM2.613 trillion against the same period a year earlier. Exports rose by 27.2 per cent to more than RM1.42 trillion, which underscores Malaysia’s competitiveness despite the pressure from a challenging global environment.

“National exports of processed food recorded a 16.4 per cent growth to RM25.75 billion versus RM22.12 billion a year earlier.

“In short, we can see that the demand for processed food, especially halal products, in the global market is expected to continue to expand,” she said.

Sharimahton said Matrade is committed to always identify appropriate and effective platforms to create market access for Malaysian exporters to penetrate the overseas markets.
