KOTA KINABALU: Sabah youth have been told to prepare for the creation of new jobs on the state's east coast, which is set to become a new economic growth centre.

Malaysian International Exhibitors Association president Datuk Jonathan Yew said there would be demand for marine and naval engineers as the state government wants to develop the area into a logistics hub.

Yeoh, who specialises in talent and capacity development, has also identified job prospects in oceanography.

He said jobs such as logistics analyst, inventory manager, warehouse manager, fleet manager, and support, as well as research and data personnel would be in demand.

"A ripple effect will kick in, creating the need for other developments and business opportunities, such as housing, industries, food and lifestyle needs," he said in a statement after visiting POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd with its senior committee member, Professor Datuk Dr Jayles Yeoh.

Yeoh said the creation of new and better-paying jobs would translate to wealth creation, which will see Sabah's east coast reach its full economic potential.

He said the area, strategically located in the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), was full of opportunities.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor during his official visit to POIC Lahad Datu last week said the state government was considering a proposal to build an international airport and create a free trade zone in Lahad Datu.

The government is also planning to establish a maritime academy and facilities to attract investors to turn POIC Lahad Datu into a transhipment and a manufacturing hub.

The construction of a satellite biomass collection centre was in progress to address aggregation of palm biomass challenges, Hajiji had said.

He had said the relocation of the new Indonesian capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan would create a tremendous economic and growth impact for industrial players in the region.
