LOCAL councils in Johor Baru must assist business operators to renew their licences, especially those that have just reopened.

Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said this was in line with the transition into endemic phase and reopening of Malaysia’s border with Singapore on April 1.

“We want businesses to enjoy the economic spillover but they must be operating legally.

“The plan is to ensure every chain of business from the hospitality and service sector, which are hotels, theme parks, retail and food and beverage, to SMEs will benefit from the reopening of the border,” he said when contacted by StarMetro.

The state government, through Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), Pasir Gudang City Council and Kulai Municipal Council, will do everything it can to expedite the process, he said.

Mohd Jafni said the number of visitors was also expected to increase during Ramadan.

“So we want those who own businesses, especially within the MBJB and MBIP areas, to come forward.

“We will assist where we can because these two local councils have the largest business districts in the city.

“We must remember that visitors will not only be coming from Singapore, but other neighbouring countries and beyond,” he said.

Mohd Jafni said local councils had also been reminded to keep the environment clean.

“The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) must ensure the cleanliness level in the city is improved and maintained,” he added.

Johor SWCorp director Cairul Hisham Jalaluddin said the company would ensure that cleanliness was at an optimal level through its concessionaire, SWM Environment Sdn Bhd.

“Surveillance is done regularly and reports are sent to the Johor housing and local government committee chairman,” he said.
