KUALA LUMPUR: Free Malaysia Today (FMT) was recognised by the Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) for its work in helping to voice the plight of SMEs.

Samenta chairman William Ng said an “Anugerah Sahabat PKS” was given to the portal as recognition for consistently supporting SMEs during the Covid-19 pandemic and even before that.

“The media, including FMT, has given a voice to the SMEs and this award is to show that it has not gone unnoticed. The SMEs do appreciate it.

“Without this voice that the media has given us, we would not have been able to focus the government’s energy and attention on the plight of the SMEs,” he said at the SME CEO Forum 2021, which was held in conjunction with Samenta’s 35th anniversary.

Other local news outlets which received the award today were Sin Chew Daily, Berita Harian and Bernama.

At the event, entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister Noh Omar presented the award to FMT’s news editor Sean Augustin.

Founded in 1986, Samenta is Malaysia’s oldest association for small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Yesterday, FMT was also among 15 local news outlets honoured with the “Service Above Self” Award by the Rotary International District 3300.

The award recognises groups or individuals who put the good of those around them above themselves, with the Rotary club this year choosing to highlight the work of the media during the Covid-19 pandemic.
