KUALA LUMPUR: Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will serve as an "impetus towards talent development, knowledge sharing and training collaborations.”

In a joint statement yesterday, they said the MOU, among others, would focus on Huawei’s global experience and success in the information and communication technology sector, as well as to leverage on Industry 4.0 for training purposes.

They said the collaboration also includes the setting up of a technical team to assist FMM members in their digital transformation initiatives.

"Both parties aim to train 5,000 digital talents for the manufacturing industry yearly for five years, ensuring the sustainability of a quality digital talent pool," they said.

FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the collaboration offered the opportunity for manufacturers, especially small and medium enterprises/industries, to leverage on technology to gain further efficiencies and extend their reach beyond domestic shores.

"While it is difficult for us to compete with manufacturers with large domestic markets in their respective countries, or on labour-intensive industries where labour costs are lower, we certainly can compete on expertise and agility, and we have a head start in this when compared to our neighbours,” he said.

Huawei Malaysia chief executive officer Michael Yuan is hoping that the industry players in FMM would continue giving Huawei their trust and the opportunity to share in developing their digital footprint.

"The digital economy around the world is expanding and it is our hope that together, we can ride this wave towards shared greater prosperity in the coming years,” he said.
