PETALING JAYA: National Recovery Council (MPN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has again placed emphasis on quickly establishing state-level panels to restore the economy.

He had first suggested establishing these state recovery councils in September last year.

Muhyiddin was previously reported as saying that the Cabinet had agreed to set up a recovery council in every state to speed up economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the MPN chairman’s dialogue session with NGOs in Kota Bharu today, he did not give reasons for the delay in establishing these state-level councils.

Bernama quoted Muhyiddin as saying that these councils should be headed by the menteri besar or the chairman of the state committee responsible for economic matters.

“Matters related to the state administration and business fall under the jurisdiction of the state government or local authorities, and not the federal government.

“The state governments should also take the necessary steps to resolve various issues as well as provide assistance and support to those affected, such as traders, especially Bumiputera entrepreneurs involved in small and medium enterprises,” he said.

Elaborating, Muhyiddin said if such issues were not given due attention, they would have a huge impact on the economy, including on the country’s poverty rate.

In fact, he said many families had slipped from the M40 group to the B40 group due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This included Muslims as well as Bumiputeras from Sabah and Sarawak, he added.

The dialogue was also attended by economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed.
